Red Spot Nerite
Red Spot Nerites are tropical, freshwater snails originally thought to come from Indonesia. They are very popular Nerites sold in the aquatics hobby and are often used in Cichlid tanks due to their lack of antennae for aggressive fish to nibble. Their colorful and interesting shell pattern and bright red shell make them a colorful addition to any tank, and has given them many names in the aquatic community including Tiger Nerites, Ruby Nerites, and Tracked Nerites. They are also relatively easy to care for.
They prefer hard water but can survive a pretty wide PH range from 6.00 to 8.50. They thrive in tropical freshwater conditions. Nerites will breed and lay eggs in the freshwater aquarium, but brackish conditions are needed for the young to survive. These snails need a 5g tank at least and 2.5 gallons of water each to remain healthy. They are a bit picky when it comes to prepared foods. If there is not enough algae for them to consume, they will nibble at fresh zucchini or algae wafers, but they prefer naturally grown algae.
These are some of the larger Nerites ranging from .5 inches to a full inch when fully grown. They typically live for about 2-3 years, but can live longer if well taken care of. Red Spot Nerites are completely peaceful. They do not eat your aquatic plants or eggs. They also do not bother baby fish, shrimp, or other snails and can be kept with a wide variety of other aquatic creatures. They are an excellent natural way to control the algae in your tank and a great addition to any aquarium.
